This week’s question:
Inspired by the spectacular melt down of Jacqueline Howett on Big Al’s Book Blog, how do you deal with a bad review?
I, like Nicole Chase (today's featured author), have not yet been published. There is a part of me that feels like my first bad review will tear me to shreds, break my heart and lead me to never write again. I say that, but I got some good advice from friend and author C.L. Wilson back in March. She pointed out reviews that had been posted for Jane Eyre, Romeo and Juliet, classics we all must adore just on principle, and they were horrible, painful, lacking in respect. She also shared the one fabulous review where a reader admitted that Cheryl changed her life. So, as a person who always (and I'm sayin' - ALWAYS) sees the glass as half full, I will hang on to the one great review and ignore the rest. I will handle it with grace as best I can. I want to keep going and hopefully someday change another person's life too.

Good advice, Lindy! I am blog hopping with you today, but the linky tool on Elizabeth's site doesn't seem to be working. Hopefully she will get that fixed soon - otherwise no one will be able to find us! :-(
ReplyDeleteHey Lindy = I'm following and saying hello from the same linky as you guys. Still not working ;(. I'm finding you from the comments, but not everyone comments.
ReplyDeleteYou have a good attitude to reviews. Like you I@m not quite there yet but would try to learn from it, (after a sufficient time a tears)and hold my head up! ;D
I too am an as yet unpublished author. This side of reviews is easier - though getting critiques can be winding! They are also fabulously educational. If everyone ALWAYS liked my work, I'd be suspicious but also ignorant. Strange, I answered the question better here than I did on my post? MMM! Might have to amend that. ;D

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I live in Georgia too. I love the fact that your friend pointed out negative reviews of works that are normally considered to be the greatest of the great. I am sure that seeing the authors that we respect getting bad reviews would help put things in perspective!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! I like that hang on to the good and let the others fall away.
ReplyDeleteHappy Follow Friday
ReplyDeleteHi! Coming through with the blog hop. I love your spirit! Your blog has a great vibe to it. I'll definitely be back!
ReplyDeleteHope you'll stop by to see mine when you get a chance. Have a wonderful weekend!

Exactly! Life's too short to get hung up on a bunch of nonsense. Spend that energy writing your next draft rather than chewing out people for having their own opinions.
ReplyDeleteGood evening Follow Friday Friends (bet you didn't think you could get another "f" word in there did ya?). Forgive my Friday night cop out but I just finished a long day of work and wanted to say, "Thank you" for following my journey. I'm happy to have you along. I think I've followed everyone in return, but if for some bizarre reason I missed you, please drop me a line. I don't want to miss a thing! Have a great weekend.
